Budget-Friendly Loco Moco (Print Version)

A comforting Hawaiian-inspired bowl with seasoned beef, savory gravy, rice, and a fried egg.

# What You'll Need:

→ Beef Patties

01 - 1 pound ground beef
02 - 1 teaspoon garlic powder
03 - 1 teaspoon onion powder
04 - ¾ teaspoon salt
05 - ½ teaspoon black pepper

→ Gravy

06 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
07 - 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
08 - 2 cups beef broth
09 - 1 tablespoon soy sauce
10 - ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
11 - ¼ teaspoon salt
12 - ¼ teaspoon black pepper

→ Assembly

13 - 2 cups cooked long-grain white rice
14 - 2 large eggs

# Steps to Follow:

01 - Combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper in a medium bowl. Gently mix by hand until seasoning is evenly distributed. Divide mixture into two equal portions and shape into patties approximately ¾ inch thick.
02 - Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a light drizzle of oil if the pan is not nonstick. Cook patties 4 to 5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Transfer patties to a plate and tent with foil to keep warm.
03 - Lower heat to medium-low and melt butter in the same skillet. Whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes until light golden. Gradually whisk in beef broth, then add soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3 to 5 minutes until gravy thickens to coat a spoon.
04 - In a separate nonstick skillet, heat a small amount of oil or butter over medium heat. Cook eggs to preferred doneness; sunny-side up or over-easy are traditional options.
05 - Warm cooked rice if necessary and divide between two shallow bowls or plates. Top each portion with a beef patty, spoon hot gravy over the patties, then place a cooked egg on top. Serve immediately while hot.

# Additional Notes:

01 - Handle ground beef minimally when mixing to keep patties tender. Use skillet drippings to enhance gravy flavor. Adjust gravy consistency by adding broth gradually. Time eggs to finish as gravy thickens. Toast rice in a small amount of butter or oil before serving for added flavor.
