# What You'll Need:

→ Meat and Protein

01 - 1.5 pounds lean ground beef

→ Grains

02 - 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice

→ Dairy

03 - 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
04 - ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
05 - 4 tablespoons unsalted butter

→ Produce

06 - 1 medium onion, diced
07 - 1 teaspoon fresh or dried thyme
08 - Fresh parsley for garnish

→ Canned and Packaged Goods

09 - 1 packet French onion soup mix
10 - 2 cups beef broth, low sodium preferred
11 - 1 cup fried onions

→ Oils and Condiments

12 - 2 tablespoons olive oil

→ Spices and Seasonings

13 - 1 teaspoon salt
14 - 1 teaspoon garlic powder
15 - 1 teaspoon onion powder
16 - ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

# Steps to Follow:

01 - Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until translucent and slightly softened.
02 - Add ground beef to the skillet with onions. Season with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, black pepper, and thyme. Cook over medium heat, breaking up meat, until fully browned. Drain excess fat and remove from heat.
03 - In a large bowl, mix browned beef, uncooked rice, French onion soup mix, and beef broth until evenly combined.
04 - Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray. Transfer beef and rice mixture evenly into the dish. Cut butter into small pieces and distribute on top.
05 - Cover dish tightly with foil and bake in a preheated 375°F (190°C) oven for 30 minutes to allow rice to cook and flavors to meld.
06 - Carefully remove foil and evenly sprinkle shredded Swiss and grated Parmesan over casserole.
07 - Return casserole uncovered to oven and bake an additional 30 minutes or until rice is tender, cheese melted and golden, and surface slightly crisp.
08 - Sprinkle fried onions over casserole and bake for 5 more minutes to crisp the topping.
09 - Remove from oven, sprinkle fresh parsley over top, and allow casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving.

# Additional Notes:

01 - Slicing butter atop before baking helps create a golden, rich crust.
02 - Covering the dish during the first bake traps steam, ensuring tender rice.
03 - Adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce to beef while browning deepens flavor.
